Hi folks
Can anyone recommend an art store in Manhattan, NY which sells lino
cutters and rubber stamp material (or large vinyl erasers)
I live in VT, not near any good art stores. Since I'm in NY for the
day I decided I should get some materials.
thanks,

I found The Art Store in NOHO has it. A bit out of the way for me but
at least it's right by the subway line I use anyway...

Hi Devlyn. There's a Utrecht Art Supply at 111 Fourth Avenue (Between 11th and 12th
Streets). Don't know if they have what you're looking for, but they've got an Art-o-Mat, so
that could lessen the blow if they don't. :-) (http://artomat.org/home.html in case you
haven't seen these beasties before.)

This may be obvious, but check a phone book when you get there.
There's GOT to be some great shops, probably privately owned, not
chains.
If no luck, (which I doubt) dash across the GW to Rt. 4 (west, of
course) in Jersey, then 17 North. There's a Michaels in the Paramus
Town center and my favorite, Pearl, just past Oradell Ave. You can U-
turn at about any intersection to return to the city.

I found a The Art Store downtown, had everything but ink pads.
I checked phone books, online, superpages.com, citidex.com, and
found only this one place which wasn't out of my way.
I ended up getting a lino knife set and a 3/4" thick block of
MasterCarve, looks like it'll do the trick.

Hi,
I haven't checked Sam Flax, but at the other big art store, Pearl,
down on Canal street, they had a few small sheets of speedball, some
mounting blocks (just plain blocks of wood, not the nice ones)and
they had a kit with some basic tools in it.
It's been my experience that most of the art stores here in
Manhattan seem to consider some things to be too "crafty" for them.
Either they don't have some things or have a very smmall selection.
I've already decided that I'll probably wind up getting most of my
supplies online.

I just placed an order from Dick Blick, online. Got a few boxes of carving erasers and some refill blades for my exacto, plus some other things. They seem to have everything I need.

Pearl must vary its stock by location; the one in Paramus has the
pink stuff in two or three sizes in with the ink pads and stamps,
and the white Speedball and all the carving tools (both Speedball
and house brand) over with the lino blocks.
And oodles and oodles of crafty stuff - yeah, must be location.
We're just not that sophisticated out in the 'burbs.

haaaaa...Yeah, location is everything they say. Some people in
Manhattan are just a tad *too* sophisticated. Nothing against New
Yorkers, They are lovely, lovely people. Just terribly, terribly
sophisticated.
